What We Are

ALERTAsia is an alliance of physicians, scientists, technicians, and laypersons committed to the idea of diminishing the medical, social and economic risks created by endemic infectious diseases and the emergence of new infectious disease threats in Southeast Asia.We are united in the firm belief that keeping the risks of emerging and re-emerging infections under control requires the disciplined application of tried and true scientific methods, as well as exploring practical new methodologies through inspired biomedical research aimed specifically at these risks.

ALERTAsia establised as a non-profit foundation for promoting human health and is organized under the laws of the Republic of Indonesia.

What We Do

ALERTAsia Foundation serves as a focal point and partner for organizations seeking to execute research, education and training activities directed towards understanding and mitigating the threat of endemic, emerging and re-emerging infections in Southeast Asia.

In doing this, we support our various organizations, laboratories, and researcher partners in applying appropriate molecular biological, immunological and epidemiological technologies to the problem of emerging and endemic microbial agents of human disease.

We seek to facilitate the creation of a network of cooperating laboratories in the region reporting reliable and verifiable findings relevant to emerging and re-emerging infections of humans.

Where We Work

Our office is located in Central Jakarta, just within minutes from the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, the Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia, and the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU), three of our main collaborators.

Our past and current projects have brought us to: Papua, West Sumba, Central Java, North Sulawesi, North Sumatra, and West Java

Why We’re Here

ALERTAsia Foundation recognizes conspicuous gaps in the technical capacity of public and private health institutions in Southeast Asia to reliably characterize and responsibly report diagnoses of human infections. ALERTAsia Foundation further recognizes the unnecessary medical, social and economic risks such gaps create. ALERTAsia Foundation believes that the application of appropriate and standardized biotechnologies in the laboratories, field and clinics of regions at risk will provide an essential shield against epidemic and pandemic infections. We believe that biotechnology is a powerful weapon, and it must be wielded against our formidable microbial enemies with wisdom and forethought.

Operate a team of certified personnel following internationally recognized standard operating procedures for the clinical and epidemiological investigation of infectious disease outbreaks, and responsibly reporting their findings to sponsors, government authorities and the public.

Operate a management team that provides timely reporting and fully transparent accountability of sponsor resource utilization.

Provide a technical, legal, fiscal and administrative platform for the sponsorship of biomedical research on emerging infections in the laboratory, field and clinic.

Support laboratory partners. Partners with and facilitates the establishment of state-of-the-art laboratories with biotechnological equipment manned by certified personnel following internationally recognized standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases providing authoritative information regarding the threats to public health posed by these infections, and responsibly reporting their findings to sponsors, government authorities, and the public .

• Execute projects that support the building of capacity for the surveillance, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of endemic & emerging infections in Southeast Asia.

• Gather the most reliable information regarding emerging infection risks in Southeast Asia using systematic and comprehensive searches of the biomedical literature, media reports and through a network of cooperating health professionals in the region.

• Identify gaps in emerging infections information and understanding and seek to obtain or promote the acquisition of information that fills these gaps.

• Develop SOPs for the screening, diagnosis and assessment of emerging infections in at-risk populations using a state-of-the-art biotechnological laboratory.

• Implement and offer certification of competencies in laboratory and field skill sets required for assessing emerging infections.

• Promote awareness of emerging infections threats and the means of mitigating those risks through technical publications in peer-reviewed journals, seminars for technical and non-technical audiences, and workshops for health professionals positioned to participate in the prevention and control of emerging infections.

• Create the technical, legal, fiscal and administrative wherewithal to attract and manage donor resources committed to the delivery of biomedical research on emerging infections.
