ALERTAsia Foundation proudly announces receipt of a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (Seattle, USA) and SC Johnson on behalf of partners at the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, Hasanuddin University School of Public Health, and the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit which was initially received on 2nd November 2009. This very generous support makes possible an ambitious and forward-looking field trial of spatial repellants against mosquitoes on Sumba Island, Indonesia for possible use in malaria control and elimination. Should success in this 4-year endeavor show positive results, the findings would open a new door to the exploration of chemical families for the safe and effective reduction of risk and harm from malaria and other mosquito-borne infections that infect millions of residents of Southeast Asia each year.
